The first plans for this new residential area in what were then age-old dunes drawn up around the end of the 19th century. The neighbourhood is typified by wide curved streets and characteristic large houses with ornate architectural elements including bay windows, roof cornices, leaded glass windows, balconies, and dormers. Fine examples of these features, which contribute to the area’s chic ambience, are to be found in the beautiiful Sweelinckplein. The area’s housing stock also contains many spacious ground floor and upper storey units.
